This 1906 Sawyer Massey Steam Traction Engine was built in Hamilton Ontario. The engine serial # is L665. It was bought by a man in Cobden, Ontario and the engine operated in the area for a few years. It was then bought by Hogin's Lumber in Shawville, Quebec.
Our client’s father bought it from Hogin's Lumber in 1964, and brought it to Almonte, Ontario the same year. Over the next 3 years, he cut out the ring under the water jacket and around the fire box. He then had a new ring made and fitted new plates to the inside and the outside of the ring, and welded these plates to the plates above the ring. He also replaced all the stay bolts and poured babbited for a new shaft bearing. Old tires were cut and the rubber installed on all the wheels. He also put a roof over the engine to keep the rain and snow off it, as he had no place to store the engine under a roof. He had it running for the Centennial Parade in Almonte, Ontario on July 1st 1967.
This engine has been shown from 1967 to 1983 at various fairs: Middleville, Pioneer Days at the International Plowing Match in Richmond, Ontario, Dow's lake with 100 year celebration of the Rideau Canal, one week at the Nepean SportsPlex, three times at the Finch Fair. For most of the past 25 years it was also shown at the Athens farm fair. It did not run from 1990 until 1998.
Our client’s son inherited the engine and displayed it at a few shows, e.g. Athens, Merrickville fair and the International Plowing Match in Navan, Ontario.
In 2002, he had to stop all shows for maintenance on the engine. He installed a new front tube sheet. The whole engine was tested with ultrasound for thickness. The boiler's bottom front section and the back tube sheet were welded back to the correct thickness. New tubes and new stay rods were fitted. The engine received a new layer of paint and was demonstrated in running condition at the 2003 International Plowing Match in Carleton Place, Ontario. It was demonstrated in 2004 at North Lanark Fair in Almonte, Ontario and in Athens, Ontario at Farmersville Days in 2008.
The engine is in great condition. It has a valid Ontario certificate of inspection, good until June, 2009.
It has 17 HP and a 28" diameter on the boiler. It weighs 8 tonnes empty, 9 tonnes with water. The fire tube is 28" x 122". The engine has been rated to 100PSI and tested to 140PSI.
Many pictures are available of both the inside and the outside of the engine. We also have videos of the engine in working order. The engine ran last weekend (July 19-20) at the Athens Farmersville Days.
The $ 30,000 CDN price is for the engine only and the buyer assumes all responsibility for taxes, duty or customs. If buyer pays for transport and or shipping then price maybe reduced. Please inquire first.
The buyer will be required to forward $ 1,000 non-refundable deposit via certified cheque or money order to start the sales process. A contract will be forwarded to the buyer for signature and the engine will be released for shipping upon the balance being paid to the owner. Again, certified cheque or money order will be accepted.
Given the nature of this rare engine, we ask that only serious inquiries be submitted to us for review.
